The church of San Pietro ad Alba Fucens, located in Abruzzo, stands on the foundations of an ancient temple of Apollo and is an extraordinary example of historical and architectural continuity. The present building mainly reflects the 12th-century Romanesque style, characterised by a three-nave interior embellished with rare Cosmatesque furnishings, such as the ambo and iconostasis decorated with mosaics and porphyry. After being almost entirely destroyed by the 1915 earthquake, the structure underwent a masterful anastylosis restoration in the 1950s, recognised as one of the finest conservation projects in Italy. The site’s walls still preserve original limestone blocks from the Roman era and numerous historical graffiti, bearing witness to the long passage of various civilisations over the centuries. Today, the monument is managed by the Ministry of Culture and represents a key reference point for the study of medieval art and regional archaeology.
